The expression "Conspiracy Theory" appeared for the first time in an article in the french newspaper "Le Monde", on October 7, 1966, to refer to theories that cast doubt on the official causes of the assassination of President JFK.

Today, this expression has become widespread, marking a tendency to stigmatize and discredit those it designates and encompasses. Indeed, the followers of the flat Earth, of Elvis Presley's survival on an island or of the fake presence of man on the Moon are considered as conspiracy theorists, as well as people who, relying on elements that are sometimes excluded from reasoning, would tend to question or challenge opinions or information that are generally accepted and presented as unquestionable truths by society and the media.
