(or numerical kabbalah) is the act of associating the letters of a word with a number to understand its meaning.

It is a form of numerology linked to the study and understanding of sacred texts. Gematria, Temura and Notarikon are the three processes of combining letters to decipher the Torah. Talmudic literature recognizes the value of classical gematria but warns the layman against the risk of superstition.

Gematria was already known in ancient times. It was revived in the Middle Ages thanks to the mystics who practiced it in order to give a (cabalistic) meaning to words and mainly to the texts of the Bible.

There are 2 types of gematria:

ree

  1. the short gematria, which is the most used:

A=1, B=2, …, Y=25, Z=26

ex : GRAAL

G = 7, R = 18, A=1, L = 12 7+18+1+1+12= 39

DIEU

D = 4, I = 9, E = 5, U = 22 4+9+5+21 = 39

SOLEIL

S = 19, O = 15, L = 12, E = 5, I = 9, 19+15+12+5+9+12 = 72

If we add the gematria of the words GRAAL and SUN, we get 111 (the number of the pole)

  1. the long gematria is the least used:

because, with bigger numbers, as you will see, the meaning to be given to the word is more random.

A = 1, B = 2, I = 9 but then J=10, K= 20, L= 30… S = 100, T = 200… Z = 800

  • ex : YODA

Y = 700, O = 60, D = 4, A = 1 700+60+4+1 = 765

PALPATINE + ANAKIN = 567

They are therefore the opposite of Yoda and, overall, it is a question here of representing a mirroring of good and evil. Moreover, we can notice that between 567 and 765, the central number is 666...

A way to symbolize the duality between hybris (pride) and dike (justice)

Interesting, no?
